Boxcutter (Film Screening + Q&A) Reza Dahya, former host of OTA Live on FLOW 93.5 FM turned filmmaker, presents his debut feature Boxcutter. The film follows Rome, an aspiring rapper with all the talent but plagued by insecurity, who sets out on a mission to get his album into the hands of Grammy-winning producer Richie Hill. Disaster strikes when his laptop—and the only copy of his album—gets stolen. With the help of his activist-artist friend Jenaya, Rome embarks on a frantic quest across Toronto to track down his producers and recover his music. As they race against time, Rome grapples with self-doubt, while Jenaya challenges his need for industry approval. Rome must decide whether to pitch for the industry co-sign or take a leap of faith and bet on himself. Boxcutter offers a raw, energetic portrayal of Toronto's hip-hop scene, identity, and the city’s evolving landscape. Stick around after the screening for a candid Q&A with Reza and other members of the cast and crew.

Zoe Lewis plays a leading role in co-starring as Jenaya.

Programmer's Notes Tonight could be Rome’s big break. All he needs to do is get his tracks in front of a Grammy Award-winning producer rumoured to be dropping in at an invite-only event. But when his computer—and, with it, his music—is stolen, Rome finds himself racing against time to recover it. Joined by childhood friend Jenaya, they embark on a quest through every corner of Toronto, encountering an array of vibrant characters who either help or throw them off course.

In the director’s words, Boxcutter is “an ode to a vibrant and underappreciated music scene.” It is also unabashedly Toronto in a way rarely seen on screen, reflecting the city we live and breathe in our neighbourhoods. Director Reza Dahya’s debut feature film inhabits the town; the rich imagery and soundscapes beautifully exhibit the movement and complexities of its characters and the place they call home.

Dahya’s love of music runs deep. Formerly the co-host of OTA Live on FLOW 93.5 FM, he channels his passion for hip-hop into Boxcutter and, like the two artists at its centre, stakes his claim on the scene and the city by capturing it on screen for the first time.

Preview (Sizzle Reel): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhb7LM0P9dc Zoe Lewis plays a tertiary character named Kiesha. This brief role features a powerful scene. Programmer's Notes Fresh off his feature-length debut Bite of Mango, Ron Dias confidently tackles an ambitious script that celebrates community, supported by a stellar ensemble cast including Kiana Madeira, Lovell Adams-Gray, and Fefe Dobson.

Morningside is first and foremost a love letter to the Scarborough neighbourhood it’s named for, and is crafted with care and authenticity that celebrates the resilience of its community. The film offers a vivid portrait of the intertwining lives of a vibrant set of characters within a community centre, set against the backdrop of looming gentrification.

This is the story of a young man with a dream of starting his own resort in Jamaica as he struggles to be a better man. It’s the story of a teen influencer who aspires to musical stardom and may actually possess the talent to realize that goal. It’s the story of a security guard with hopes of making it on the police force. But it's also the story of the tragic ripple effect of gun violence and how that shatters these lives…

In Morningside, Dias attempts a far more challenging narrative than his first feature and that risk pays off.

    Content advisory: gun violence

BOXCUTTER CAST & CREW SCREENING When an aspiring rapper's laptop is stolen, he is focused on a quest across the city to recover his music in time for the event that could change his life--a meeting with a Grammy Award-winning producer. Grounded in its realist approach, director Reza Dayha crafts a love letter to Toronto that leaves an impression long after its last beat. A Q&A with director Reza Dahya, producer Soko Negash, and lead actors Ashton James and Zoe Lewis will follow the screening.
